Children's Learn to Swim Lessons

Link to Learn to Swim Timetable
City of Chester Swimming Club provides lessons for children from non-swimmer to an advanced level with a natural transition into competitive swimming or water polo if the appropriate standard is achieved. Lessons are for children from the age of 4 years and cater for children at Primary School. Prior to starting formal swimming lessons we suggest you visit the pool with your child on a regular basis to build confidence and have fun. Lessons continue throughout school holidays which gives continuity to enhance learning.
All teachers hold ASA Teaching and the ASA/RLSS Teachers rescue test, our teachers are CRB checked. Teacher pupil ratio Stage 1 & 2 class is 2 : 10 [One teacher on the poolside and one Assistant in the water], all other half hour groups have a ratio of 1 : 10. The hour groups have a ratio of 1 : 20.
Children make progress through the groups as they develop their strokes and achieve the awards set out for each group. Lessons are based around the ASA National Teaching Plan 2007
On the final lesson of each course there is a certificate presentation day followed by a fun session in the pool. There is no additional charge for awards.
Longer distance awards that cannot be achieved in a normal lesson can be achieved on the first Saturday in each quarter 12.00 – 2pm in the Atlantic pool, these dates are advertised on the notice board at the City Baths.
Children can join at any point in a course providing there are spaces, there is usually a waiting list for spaces in the Stage 1 – 2 classes.
Half hour lessons
ASA National Teaching Plan awards Stage 1 – 4 - classes take place across the width of the pool starting with Stage 1 & 2 in the shallow end, Stage 3 in the middle and Stage 4 at the deep end of the pool. On week 5 and 10 of each course all these classes swim lengths, this gives children the opportunity to do distance awards and for the teachers to assess readiness to move up to the next group.
ASA National Teaching Plan awards Stage 5 & 6 – classes take place swimming lengths swimmers will need to be able to swim Backstroke, Breaststroke and Front crawl using the correct breathing technique and maintaining good style. This group will also start to learn Butterfly.
One hour development classes
ASA National Teaching Plan awards Stage 7 - a more advanced class for swimmers developing all their strokes to a higher standard and to include Butterfly.
